Dry needling is a great type of Physiotherapy treatment that is becoming more and more popular due to its fast acting pain relief. Dry needling uses very thin needles (so thin they could fit inside most injections!) inserted into trigger points or ‘knots’ in the muscle. The results can be instantaneous and usually much quicker than other hands on forms of physiotherapy which makes dry needling very popular with  people in pain!

Dry needling should not be confused with acupuncture. Whereas acupuncture is based on traditional Chinese medicine of ‘meridians’ or channels that are believed to run through the body, dry needling is based on current medical science and research.  Actually the only similarities  are the needles that are used! Modern dry needling evolved from the work of Dr. Janet Travell (former President John F. Kennedy’s personal physician) and Dr. David G. Simons in the 1940s and has become popular among Physiotherapists for its fast acting results.

I have been using dry needling as an effective adjunct to my treatments for a few years now and love the way in can instantly reduce pain! I find that it is particularly effective when someone has severe muscle tightness or spasm that is causing pain as the needles really help to relax tight muscle fibres. Dry needling can also help improve circulation and improve range of motion.

If you are interested in trying dry needling, ring me today at 086 358 2911 to have a chat about it and get you booked in!
