Some clients ask us if we do ultrasound/electrotherapy or tell us of previous experience getting these treatments with other physios. We always tell them that we do not do any of these treatments….we don’t even have any of these machines in the clinic! The reason being is, that quite simply, it does not work!

As Chartered Physiotherapists, we have a responsibility to stay up-to-date with the evidence. Here at Reform Physiotherapy, we meet weekly as a team to discuss new evidence emerging in the Physiotherapy world.

US

Although Ultrasound was very much ‘in vogue’ in the 90’s and early 00’s, more recent evidence shows that ultrasound does not have any long term effect on pain or function for most injuries. Furthermore, literature reviews and guidelines all agree that these modalities should not be used for the management of low back pain. The recently released NICE Guidelines for management of low back pain advise that Physiotherapists should not provide  ultrasound/TENS/interferential for patients presenting with low back pain.

When using low back pain as an example, the strongest evidence for Physiotherapy intervention that is available at present suggests that education, prescriptive exercise and manual therapy (hands on treatment) should be used when treating low back pain. This can vary per presentation and diagnosis.

At Reform we not only want to treat your pain now, but prevent it from coming back in the future. That is why everyone coming in will receive education about their injury and advice on how to prevent it recurring. We want to find a long term solution for your pain to allow you to get on with your life injury-free! If you would like to book in for an appointment, call 086 3582911.
